about

Another Birthday release from Comanchero, this time in celebration of Drummer Greg Moon!

This song is an amalgam of a lot of people we've known or have met who’ve done some selfish things. Once Greg started it with the line “this is the song about the smiling vagrant” it pretty much wrote itself. We capoed up to B minor from Am then came up with the three different rhythm parts which essentially keep doubling from a drummer's perspective. That seemed to keep things interesting. A bit of spit and polish and here it is. Enjoy!

lyrics

Kiss before the Goodbye

This is the song about the smiling vagrant
Who never could turn a free drink down
He’s got stories that ain’t seen the light of day
Your eyes will roll, your jaw will toast the ground
He’s got all the time to get there
And I don’t believe it matters where he goes
But if you’re betting on the promises he’ll make
You’ll get bitten by the wolf in beggars clothes

Chorus:
When all he’s done is broken every vow he’s made someone
it’s past the time you opened your eyes
And all the fun you thought he promised you and everyone
it’s just the kiss before the goodbye

Now if you’re looking for a reason
You won’t find one in his eyes
They’re just fixed upon the mirror behind the bar
Making sure that face won’t betray the lie
And he ain’t listening to a word you say
He’s just waiting for his turn to talk
Spouting theories only the paranoid believe
A self anointed preacher without a flock

Chorus

I’ve seen him leave the bar with that divorcee
I’ve seen him leave with a waitress or two
I’m sure he wasn’t aiming on breaking many hearts
But he’ll be the first to say his name is true
Now I know it’s just my opinion
My old man told me to keep them to myself
But I’ve seen many of you taken by his charms
So here’s to you and here’s to your health

Chorus
